I just scored a "junk watch" which someone simply let me have yesterday. During the night, somebody had dumped a bunch of leftover yard sale crap at the back door of the fountain pen shop where I work many weekends. Two women from the Prevention of Blindness shop next door where going through it and I spied a plastic bag with a beat-up pocket watch in it. I asked nicely, "Can I have that?" They were glad to give it to me. I looked at it and saw it said Waltham on the face. I crossed my fingers that it might be a diamond in the rough.

It's not running and needs a new bow (where you attach your watch chain), but when I took it home and opened it up, I discovered I DID have a diamond in the rough! I have a 1901 Waltham Crescent Street, Model 1892, 18s, 21 jewel, adjusted watch, lever set, S/N 10585396. It's got a porcelain double sunk dial, with a crystal that was replaced with a yellowing plastic one at some point. The hands are showing some minor oxidation, but the movement looks okay from what I can tell. The case is a silveroid from the Keystone Watchcase Co., case S/N 8126538.

So, I just scored a FREE railroad grade (for its day) pocket watch. I sent an e-mail to one of my watch repair guys I've sent things to in the past and hope to send it his way to get it up and running again.
